Your sticker expires on the last day of the month printed on it — not the first, and nobody mails you a reminder. We're an official Virginia inspection station on West Williamsburg Road, about a mile from the airport, and we've been signing off on stickers in this building since 1980.
Drop it off in the morning and it's usually ready by lunch. The price is $20 because that's the ceiling the Commonwealth sets for a passenger vehicle — every honest station in Virginia charges the same thing. What differs is what happens when something fails.

What happens if your car fails
This is the part people worry about, so here it is straight. If your vehicle fails, we put a rejection sticker on it. Under Virginia law that sticker is good for 15 calendar days beyond the day of inspection, and during that window you can't be charged for the equipment violation that caused the rejection.
You are not obligated to have us do the repair. Take it anywhere you like — we'll hand you the write-up. If you do bring it back to us inside those 15 days, we only have to re-inspect the item that failed, not the whole car.
We photograph what failed and show you. Nobody at this shop has ever needed to invent a reason to reject a vehicle.
The thing most people don't know about an expired sticker
Since 2020, Virginia Code § 46.2-1157(E) has said an officer cannot stop you for an expired inspection sticker until the first day of the fourth month after it expired. That is not permission to run late — an expired sticker is still a violation, and it still matters to your insurance company after a wreck.
But it does mean that if you're two weeks past and panicking, you have room to get it done properly instead of taking the first appointment you can find. Call us. We'll get you on the board.
When to come
The first week of your expiration month is the calmest week we have. The last three days of the month are the worst — that's when everyone who forgot shows up at once, and it's the only time we ever have to turn someone away.
Morning drop-off is the fastest path through. Leave it with us at eight, and most days you're picking it up before the afternoon school run.

How much is a Virginia state inspection in Sandston?
$20 for a passenger car, truck, trailer or motor home. That is the maximum a station may charge under Virginia Code § 46.2-1167 — it is the same at every legitimate station in the Commonwealth. Motorcycles and autocycles are $12. Commercial vehicles are $51.
When does my Virginia inspection sticker actually expire?
The last day of the month printed on the sticker, weekday or weekend. Virginia State Police do not mail a reminder — it is on you to watch the windshield.
What happens if my car fails the inspection?
You get a rejection sticker, valid for 15 calendar days beyond the day of inspection. In that window you can't be cited for the equipment defect that caused the failure. You may have the repair done anywhere — if you bring it back to us inside 15 days, we only re-inspect the item that failed.
Do I need an appointment for a state inspection?
We don't take appointments — you drop it off and we work through the day in order. A morning drop-off is almost always same-day. Call (804) 737-2828 to tell us you're coming, especially in the last week of the month.
Can I get pulled over for an expired inspection sticker?
Not immediately. Virginia Code § 46.2-1157(E) bars a stop for an expired sticker until the first day of the fourth month after expiration. It is still a violation, though, and still worth fixing this week.
Do you inspect vehicles you did not repair?
Every day. An inspection is an inspection — we don't care where the car has been serviced, and we don't inspect harder because you're new.
